In a poignant tribute to his childhood hero, Lewis Hamilton drove Ayrton Senna’s iconic 1990 McLaren MP4/5B at Interlagos during the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix weekend. This demonstration marked a significant moment in Formula 1 history, as Hamilton honored the legacy of the three-time world champion.
The McLaren MP4/5B, powered by a 3.5-litre Honda V10 engine, was the car in which Senna secured his second World Championship in 1990. Hamilton’s demonstration laps took place under rainy conditions, adding to the emotional significance of the event. During his run, Hamilton stopped to take a Brazilian flag from a marshal, echoing Senna’s own tradition of celebrating victories at Interlagos.
Reflecting on the experience, Hamilton described it as “the greatest honour of my career,” expressing deep emotion as he revisited his childhood memories of watching Senna race at the same circuit. The event was part of the “Senna Sempre” initiative, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Senna’s passing and celebrating his enduring impact on the sport.

TAG Heuer, a long-time partner of McLaren during Senna’s era, continues to honor his legacy through special edition timepieces. Their association with Senna underscores a shared commitment to precision and excellence in motorsport.
This tribute not only celebrated Senna’s achievements but also highlighted the enduring connection between past and present champions, reinforcing the timeless spirit of Formula 1.
