The 2026 TOTO Japan Classic opened at Taiheiyo Club Minori Course in Omitama, Ibaraki, with three Japanese players sharing the first-round lead following opening rounds of six-under-par 66. Miyu Yamashita, Aki Iwai and Sayaka Takahashi sit at the top of the leaderboard after the opening 18 holes, setting the stage for an increasingly competitive weekend on home soil.
Yamashita arrives in Japan following a successful title defence at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia, where she secured her third victory of the 2026 season and fifth LPGA Tour title. Continuing that momentum, the 25-year-old delivered a bogey-free opening round, closing with consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to reach six-under-par. Her round included additional birdies at the second, fifth, eighth and 12th, placing her alongside two compatriots at the top of the standings.

Aki Iwai also produced a six-under-par 66, recovering from a bogey on the 10th with a decisive run of birdies across the back nine. After opening with birdies at the second, sixth and ninth, Iwai added further gains at the 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th holes. A closing bogey on the 18th prevented her from taking the outright lead, leaving her level with Yamashita and Takahashi.

Just one stroke behind the leading trio, Minami Hiruta, Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn and Fuka Suga share fourth place at five-under-par 67. The group remains within immediate reach of the lead as the tournament moves into its second round.
For Yamashita, the opening day presents an opportunity to extend an impressive run of form following consecutive victories at the Maybank Championship and a strong season that has already included titles at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give and the CPKC Women’s Open. With 54 holes remaining, she will look to maintain that momentum as she pursues a fourth victory of the season.
The TOTO Japan Classic continues through November 8 at Taiheiyo Club Minori Course, where the leading Japanese contingent will look to build on its opening-day performance as the race for the title develops.
