POLLUSUB TURNS FRENCH PORTS INTO UNDERWATER FILTERS AGAINST OCEAN POLLUTION

Marine pollution is often associated with floating plastics drifting across the ocean’s surface, but much of the problem lies out of sight beneath the waterline. Across busy harbors and coastal channels, debris carried by currents gradually sinks, settling on the seabed where it becomes significantly harder to recover. Addressing this largely invisible layer of pollution is PolluSub, a French initiative that has been recognised as a winner of the Defenders of the Sea Award as part of the global Defender Awards programme.

Developed under the Blue Odyssey Initiative, PolluSub focuses on intercepting submerged waste before it settles permanently on the ocean floor. While surface-level cleanup technologies have expanded rapidly in recent years, a significant portion of marine debris eventually sinks. By targeting this overlooked stage of pollution, the project introduces a preventative approach aimed at protecting marine ecosystems before waste becomes embedded in deep ocean environments.

The concept behind PolluSub is strikingly simple. Installed across strategic passages such as port entrances and shallow seabed channels, the system uses a discreet underwater net designed to capture debris travelling along the seabed. Acting as an environmental filter, the installation stops waste carried by currents before it reaches deeper waters where recovery becomes far more complex and costly.

Ports play a crucial role in the lifecycle of marine debris. Research conducted through the Blue Odyssey expeditions across Mediterranean coastal regions found that harbours frequently act as accumulation zones, gathering waste transported from rivers, urban runoff, and maritime activity. By installing filtration systems at these natural gateways, PolluSub transforms ports into active points of environmental protection rather than passive conduits for pollution.

Beyond the technology itself, the initiative also aims to raise awareness among port authorities, maritime professionals, and coastal communities. The goal is to create a scalable model that can be replicated across ports in France and eventually adopted internationally, helping shape new environmental standards for coastal infrastructure.

Recognition through the Defender Awards provides both visibility and practical support for the project’s next phase. As part of the programme, the initiative receives operational assistance and logistical support, including the use of a Land Rover Defender 110, which will help transport equipment and act as a mobile base for teams installing pilot systems along targeted coastlines.

As global efforts intensify to protect marine ecosystems, solutions like PolluSub highlight an important shift in environmental strategy: preventing pollution before it disappears beneath the surface. By turning port entrances into underwater filters, the initiative demonstrates how small infrastructure changes could play a significant role in safeguarding the world’s oceans.
